Politicised crime: causes for the discursive politicisation of organised crime in Latin America

Why do criminal groups decide to adopt political discourses? We argue that an armed group’s discursive politicisation (the public declaration of motivations) is more likely when the state declares organisation be existential threat, militarises fight against it (securitisation), and leaders group have had training. This discourse aims reduce state’s military actions them gain civilian support. argument demonstrated through a qualitative comparative analysis six Latin American cases: Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia Los Rastrojos (Colombia), Militarizado Partido Comunista del Perú (Peru), Primeiro Comando da Capital (Brazil), Tren Aragua (Venezuela), Cartel Sinaloa (Mexico). Three adopted discourse, others did not. provide analytical framework for actors who not necessarily fit into insurgent, paramilitary or simple typology.
